Steamboat Springs hockey falls in opening weekend on the road

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The youth on the Steamboat Springs High School hockey team showed improvement this weekend as seven players made their varsity debut.

The Sailors dropped their first game to Dakota Ridge 6-0, but Saturday’s game against Cherry Creek showed some improvement. Senior Wyatt Boatright found the back of the net twice, but the team fell by a score of 9-2.

Senior Patrick Sumner and sophomore Ryan McNamara saw action in goal. The junior varsity team tied Cherry Creek 2-2 then lost to Heritage 9-0.

The Sailors (0-2, 0-0) open home competition against Crested Butte (1-0, 1-0) at 7:45 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday at Howelsen Ice Arena.

Hayden boys basketball 1-1 during weekend

Following a 49-22 loss to Peyton, the Tigers bounced back with a 50-46 victory over Kiowa. The Tigers had four players score in the double figures. Chris Carrouth led the charge with 13 points.
