Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Soroco track athletes all bound for state

Teams qualify 16 individual athletes, 6 relay teams

Chloe Veilleux leads the field in the 800 during a meet at Moffat County High School last month. Veilleux was strong enough this season to qualify for the state championships in five different events. She'll need to cut back, however, as athletes can only compete in four events at one meet.

— Hayden High School track coach Pat Moore's cellphone service was at its most frustrating Thursday in Kremmling, fluctuating in and out in a moment when he desperately wanted it in.

It was the last day of the regular season for Moore's Tigers, the last opportunity for those athletes to better their times and distances. The top 18 in each event in the classification qualify for the state championships, which begin Thursday in Lakewood.

The results from the meet at West Grand High School were being uploaded instantly, the top-18 list updating constantly, except Moore couldn't check them.

All he knew initially was that Hayden junior Alan Aguirre was fast in the 100-meter dash.

He didn't know Aguirre had been fast enough until a text came through that spotty cellphone reception from his wife, who had been monitoring the results from home.

"I had to race around the track to find him and tell him," Moore said.

Aguirre's time in the 100, 11.67 seconds, was a career best, 0.22 second faster than he'd run at any point this season and 0.59 second faster than he ran in the first meet of the season.

His time has dropped steadily, and Thursday, it was enough to throw him into 16th place in Class 2A in the state. He had to wait through the weekend as the other 2A runners across the state ran their final races, but when the dust settled, the Thursday celebration had been vindicated: Aguirre was in at 18th place, 0.01 second ahead of the next-best 100-meter runner.

It was that kind of weekend, exhausting and stressful, as local track athletes tried their best to improve their marks, then waited to see if those results would hold up.

In the end, a large group of local athletes are poised to make the trip to Lakewood.
Things won't be completely finalized until Tuesday. Athletes can only compete in four events, and coaches often use strategy in deciding where to deploy their best, so that could open up some spots for athletes currently in 19th, 20th and 21st place.

As of now, nine Soroco athletes are in line to qualify in individual events. The Rams will also send three girls relay teams.

Four Hayden athletes qualified individually, and the girls will race two relay teams.

Steamboat had three athletes make the cut and will send one relay team.

"As we move into our state championship week, we are excited for our athletes who have qualified," Steamboat coach Lisa Renee Tumminello said. "We are so proud of all the athletes, however, for their incredible growth and development, both individually and as a team."

Steamboat will definitely take its top two girls distance runners to state, and both should be in the hunt for medals. Maggi Congdon has the fourth-best Class 3A time in the 1,600-meter run. Winter Boese has the eight-best time in that event.

Boese also has the 10th-best time in the 800, with Congdon 11th.

The squad will also race with its 3,200-meter relay team.

On the boys side, Dawson Lindquist jumped his way into the state tournament, qualifying 14th in high jump.

Soroco will send a deep squad, one that has a chance to bring home several state championships.

Mattie Rossi will go into state with the best time in both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. Ben Kelley has the best time in the 800 and the 1,600. Grant Redmond cleared 6 feet, 6 inches Thursday in West Grand to lock down the top mark in the high jump.

Rossi also made the mark in the 400, where she has the 13th-best time. Kelley is also qualified in the 400, where he has the fourth-best time, and the 3,200, where he's seventh.

Chloe Veilleux, meanwhile, qualified in too many events, five individually, and will have to make some tough decisions before the meet to get to four.
She's got the third-best time in the 1,600, fourth best in the 800 and the 3,200, eighth-best in the 300 hurdles and 18th-best in the 100 hurdles.

Cassie Constine is seventh in triple jump, and Kourtney Bruner is 14th in the 200.

The girls team also qualified three relays: the sprint medley, eighth, the 800 relay, ninth, and the 1,600 relay, 10th.

Cody Reynen is 15th in high jump and Brandon Veilleux 17th. Harrison Ashley is 11th in pole vault.

Hayden is in with Aguirre, 18th in the 100, but that's only the start.

Chris Carrouth in sitting 16th in the 800, and Faith Day soared into the field in 11th in the high jump.

Hannah Wilkie offers the team a great shot at a state championship in the 800, where she has the best time.

The girls 1,600 relay and the sprint medley relay also both made the cut, in 11th and ninth places, respectively.
