Steamboat Springs Figure Skate Club competes in Fort Collins

— Eight skaters from the Steamboat Springs Figure Skate Club competed at the Fort Collins Classic at the Edora Pool Ice Center last weekend. More than 240 competitors ranging from beginner to senior levels competed during a four-day period.

Clare Franklin, a sophomore at Steamboat Springs High School, placed first in Artistic Dramatic Juvenile Open program. Cassie Wilhelm, also a sophomore, placed fourth in Artistic Light Pre-Juvenile Open. Franklin also was fifth in compulsories and first in free skate in the Pre-Juvenile Open category.

Students from Steamboat Springs Middle School competed in the Pre-Preliminary division. Placing first and second, respectively, in spins were seventh-grader Amanda Perlman and eighth-grader Gillian Cook. Mariah Walker, also an eighth-grader, was fourth. Steamboat swept compulsory with Perlman in first, Walker in second, Cook third and Sage Turek, an eighth-grader at Emerald Mountain School, in fourth.

Steamboat skaters also showed well in the Pre-Preliminary free skate with Cook placing fourth in open, Perlman placing third in limited and Turek and Walker coming in first and second, respectively, in test track.

On Sunday, Natasha Curzon, a fourth-grader at Soda Creek Elementary School, placed first in elements and free skate in the Basic 6 division. Indigo Enger, a seventh-grader, placed first in compulsory and fourth in programs with music in the Freeskate 5 division.

Accompanying the skaters to Fort Collins were coaches Courtney Gill and Kim Haggarty.

The skaters now will participate in an abbreviated April and May practice schedule and then will begin summer training in late June. Competitions in Albuquerque and Vail are on the agenda.
