Steamboat Springs elementary students excel on CMAS tests

The percentage of Steamboat Springs elementary students scoring in the two highest levels for social studies knowledge is more than double the state average, according to new state data.
The information released last week is part of the results from the Colorado Measures of Academic Success, or CMAS, exams taken by students this spring.
According to the results, 50 percent of Steamboat Springs School district fourth graders showed strong or distinguished command in social studies, compared with 21.8 percent statewide. The remaining half of students ranked as having moderate (41.7 percent) or limited (8.3 percent) command.
In science, 61.8 percent of fifth graders showed strong or distinguished command, compared with 34.8 percent statewide.
“Anytime you’re above the state average is good, but to be in double digits above state averages is a great tribute to everybody involved in the system,” said Marty Lamansky, district director of teaching and learning.
Seventh grade students who were tested in social studies and eighth grade students who were tested in science also scored well above state averages for students showing strong or distinguished command.
Lamansky said he had only taken a preliminary look at the CMAS data and planned to look more closely at how different subgroups performed on the tests.
Overall scores were not as impressive for students in neighboring Hayden and South Routt school districts.
In Hayden, only eighth grade students tested in science ranked as having distinguished command, the highest ranking, while in South Routt, only fifth grade students tested in science ranked as having distinguished command.
Hayden ranked well below state averages in elementary science and on par with state averages in elementary social studies. Middle school science scores in Hayden improved significantly over 2014, with 38.4 percent of students ranking as strong or distinguished command, compared with 34.8 percent statewide. Middle school social studies scores were below state averages, with only 3.7 percent of students ranking as strong or distinguished command, compared to 17.6 percent statewide.
In South Routt, students struggled most with social studies, falling well below state averages for strong or distinguished command. In science, South Routt Elementary School students were below the state average, while middle school students were above, with 35.7 percent ranked as strong command, compared with 29 percent ranked as strong or distinguished command statewide.
Students who rank as having strong or distinguished command of a subject are considered on track to be college and career ready, according to the Colorado Department of Education.
Administrators from Hayden and South Routt weren’t immediately available Monday to discuss their districts’ results.
Statewide, average CMAS scores increased for 2015 compared to 2014, with the exception of eighth grade science, where statewide averages were lower in 2015.
