Steamboat Springs boys basketball travels for Western Slope competition

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — No. 7 Steamboat Springs High School boys basketball (9-2) will travel to Palisade (7-3) on Friday, Jan. 11, and Rifle (7-2) on Saturday, Jan. 12, to kick off Western Slope League play.

The competition is stacked with all teams boasting a winning record. Steamboat senior Mac Riniker has remained the top scorer for the Sailors, averaging 18.5 points per game. Sailors senior Aden Knaus is next in line averaging 10.5 points per game.

Riniker also boasts a season-total of 108 rebounds, including 79 defensive and 29 offensive rebounds. Sailors senior Tyler Doyne has also been strong at the basket with 67 total rebounds. The Bulldogs don’t have the numbers that the Sailors do, but Palisade also has two key players to keep an eye on — senior Sebastian Campbell and junior Kevin Loya, each average 11.7 points per game.

Junior Trey Lujan will be the player to watch from Rifle, averaging 12.9 points per game while also having the second-most steals on the team with 10. Senior Omar Chavez leads the Bears with 52 total rebounds on the season.
