Steamboat soccer shuts out Palisade in Grand Junction

Luke Graham

— Short-handed doesn’t mean the Steamboat Springs High School boys soccer team was short-sighted.

Steamboat, coming off its first loss of the year at Centaurus on Saturday, knew the team wasn’t playing as sharp as it had been and that it would be without several key players.

It didn’t seem to matter as Steamboat rolled Palisade in Grand Junction, building up a four-goal halftime lead en route to a 5-0 win.

“We’re going through that hump of the season where we’re dealing with some injuries and sickness,” coach Rob Bohlmann said. “We were minus a chunk of our squad, and when you see some players step in, that’s a sign of a solid team.”

The Sailors (6-1-1 overall, 4-0-1 in league play) were without regular contributors Enrique Lopez, Wilber Ranieri, Mac Noel, Noah Glaisher and Kai Rogers.

Still, Steamboat got contributions from all over, specifically from seniors Buck Williams and Tommy Lyon.

Steamboat, which faced an offsides trap against Centaurus, saw a similar set against Palisade. This time, however, the Sailors were able to take advantage.

It started just two minutes in when Vincent Kretzschmar fed an ideal ball to Lance Ostrom, who got behind the defense for a 1-0 lead. From there, Steamboat poured in four more goals.

The team now turns its attention to a 6 p.m. Friday game at Gardner Field against Jefferson Academy.

Bohlmann said he didn’t know much about the Jaguars, saying the game was scheduled late for both schools to get a 15th game on the schedule.

“We’re just right at that midway mark of our games,” he said. “We’re addressing that midseason team evaluation. We’re working on what we are doing well and what we need to improve on.”
