Steamboat school supply drive planned for next two weekends

— Colorado Student Care is once again seeking donations of school supplies to distribute to schools in the region.

The nonprofit’s fourth annual supply drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday and Aug. 29 to Sept. 1 in front of the Steamboat Springs Walmart.

The supply drive has grown significantly since it began in 2011, and the it’s expected to gather $11,000 worth of donations and supplies this year, said Colorado Student Care director George Avgares.

“I think we’re good on backpacks, but we need lots of general supplies,” Avgares said.

Avgares said that school supply lists have a wide range of items on them, and his organization is accepting all types of donations.

Last year, Avgares filled eight 35-gallon tubs full of supplies, which he distributed to area schools. The organization also filled 120 backpacks, which were donated to schools and distributed by staff, through the support of private sponsorships

Most of the supplies are donated to elementary schools in Routt County.

“The teachers will identify the kids who need the backpacks most,” Avgares said.

Avgares said he will be at Walmart through each of the weekends collecting supplies. Free food and drinks will be available.

“I set up shop in front of Walmart, and I’ll pretty much live there for the two weekends,” Avgares said.

He said new and used supplies are sought.

“Lightly used supplies would be fantastic, too,” Avgares said.

Colorado Student Care is a nonprofit with a main focus of helping high school students pursue higher education.
