STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs Rugby Football Club opened its season Saturday in Aspen.

The last time these teams met, the Aspen Rugby Football Club, perennial favorites to win the Summer Mountain League and 2017 champions, defeated Steamboat by a margin of 66-19. This year, however, Steamboat arrived more prepared for the challenge.

Behind a three-try performance by new flyhalf Lomani Tongotongo, Steamboat upset Aspen 38-27. Other try scorers were tighthead prop Kantoa Rimon, outside center Gabe Furnival and scrumhalf and coach Michael Hickey. Rob Schwartz converted four of six kicks.

Steamboat looks to build on this success when they host Grand Junction Rugby Football Club at 1 p.m. Saturday at Whistler Park. The match is free to attend.
