Steamboat Pilot & Today to be distributed free on Sundays

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — A big change is on the horizon for the Sunday Steamboat Pilot & Today. Beginning, April 8, the Sunday paper will be distributed free like the Steamboat Today.

That day will also mark a change to the newspaper’s name as the publication becomes the Steamboat Pilot & Today seven days a week, combining the paper’s 134-year history with the success of the free distribution model that has guided the Steamboat Today since 1989.

On Sundays, the Steamboat Pilot & Today will be available through the same wide network of locations and racks where the Steamboat Today is currently distributed Monday through Saturday.

“Transitioning to a free Sunday newspaper will almost double our Sunday circulation, thereby providing our newspaper to more readers,” said Editor Lisa Schlichtman. “We believe this will best position Steamboat Pilot & Today to be able to continue to serve Steamboat Springs and Routt County well into the future, and the increased distribution makes the paper more accessible to more people, which not only benefits readers but our advertisers as well.”

In advance of this change, the Steamboat Pilot & Today offered a refund to current Sunday subscribers. They also had the option to continue to have the paper delivered by mail to them for the balance of their subscription.

The decision to make the Sunday edition free was made locally by the newspaper’s management team after analyzing results of surveys conducted last fall. More than half of community members who participated — 51 percent — indicated they’d be much more likely to read the Sunday edition if it were distributed free like Steamboat Today.

“Basically, we’re making the change because both readership and revenue have been declining on Sunday for a number of years, and it is time to turn that around,” Schlichtman explained.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today will continue to offer mail subscriptions; however, the rates will increase to cover an anticipated increase in mailing costs.
