Steamboat Pilot & Today named best newspaper of its size
The Steamboat Pilot & Today was named the top overall newspaper in its circulation class for the ninth time in 10 years Saturday during the Colorado Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Awards banquet in downtown Denver. The Pilot & Today also won two of the contest’s four Best of Show awards, handed out to the top newspaper contest entries regardless of circulation size.
The Pilot & Today eked past the Durango Herald to win the General Excellence Award for daily newspapers with circulations of 7,500 to 15,000. The Pilot & Today also won the sweepstakes awards in the Advertising and Photo & Design categories. The sweepstakes award for the Editorial category went to the Durango Herald.
The Pilot & Today’s Best of Show awards, given to the top contest entry in each of four categories — editorial, advertising, photo and design — went to Nicole Miller for her news page design of Feb. 3, 2011, and to Matt Stensland for his Aug. 20, 2011, photograph of Hayden youth Tyler Boyer hugging his steer goodbye at the Routt County Fair. Miller’s front page design highlighted the bitter cold weather that gripped Steamboat Springs the previous morning, highlighted by Steamboat schools being closed for the first time in 22 years.
“It’s very humbling to receive such strong recognition from our peers,” Editor Brent Boyer said Saturday. “And to win two Best of Show awards is really a testament to the level of talent and creativity among our employees. I’m so proud of the work they do day in and day out on behalf of our community.”
The Craig Daily Press, the Pilot & Today’s sister newspaper, also was named the top overall newspaper in its circulation class. It also won the sweepstakes awards in all three contest categories.
