Steamboat Nordic team adds 1 more to state-qualifier list

— The hero of the race didn't even actually race Sunday for the Steamboat Springs High School Nordic skiing team.

The squad set out in warm, slushy conditions for its final regular season event of the year, a Classic skiing race in Frisco.

"The temps were in the 40s during our race, with rain on and off," coach Jesse Wilkins wrote in an email. "They were really challenging conditions. Luckily, we've got a great wax guy, Pat Gleason, so we had as good of skis as we could get for that type of snow."

The Sailors surfed their way to strong results and were able to add one more skier to their list of state qualifiers.

Quinn Wellman wasn't the fastest Steamboater on the boys side, but he was fast enough to finish ahead of the state qualifying line. He was 45th, and the line was at 47th, so he made the cut.

"Quinn had by far his best classic race of the season," Wilkins said.
