Steamboat mountain bikers head to state competition

Gunnar Gilbertson races down a track at regionals. He is one of the 17 state qualifiers for Steamboat’s mountain biking league.

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — Steamboat Springs will send 17 athletes to the Colorado Cycling League state championship in Durango on Saturday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 21.

Athletes qualified by placing in the top 80 of their age division at regionals. Steamboat Springs’ Cam Owens won the regional championship while others received top-20 finishes to qualify for state.

On the girls side, Eliza Fox and Reilly Mewborn placed 11th and 12th respectively.

The girls would also qualify Liesel Wilkinson, Rose Epstein, Ryley Seibel and Elena Wittemyer for state.

In addition to Owens, Alden Wade placed 11th and Daniel Kempers placed 16th for the boys. Max Hamilton, Louis Bartels, Forrest Christian, Jaxson Fryer, Gunnar Gilbertson, Dylan Kuntz, Keegan Millen, Derek Pettigrew and Matthew Kempers also qualified.

“It’s rewarding because I know how hard they work,” head coach Blair Seymour said. “It is about the process, but they do have goals and they really want to make it to state. It’s rewarding as a coach to see how hard they have worked to achieve their goal.”
