Steamboat hockey team wins in Pueblo, 3-2

The Steamboat Springs High School hockey team got back to its winning ways Friday, outlasting Pueblo County, 3-2, on the road.

Steamboat, 9-3-2 overall, jumped out to an early lead and did enough late to come away with the win.

“I’m real happy with the win,” Steamboat coach Jeff Ruff said. “To go to a place like Pueblo, they’re a physical team and real big team. They always have been. It was a physical game, and we got out to a good lead.”

Steamboat went up, 2-0,

in the second period on

goals from Lance Ostrom and Ian Anderson.

Pueblo County’s Ryan Barnes scored with three seconds left in the second period to cut the Steamboat lead to 2-1.

Ostrom added his second tally early in the third period, in what proved to be the game-winner. Ian Naylor scored late for Pueblo County, and Steamboat killed two late penalties to get the win.

The Sailors were without leading scorer Jake Bearss, who is recovering from a shoulder injury.

In his place, Ostrom — a sophomore — had one of his best games as a prep player.

“He’s one of the guys we’re looking at to pick up his game,” Ruff said. “He’s a big part of our playoff run.”

That run continues at 7 p.m. today at Valor Christian. Valor features possibly Colorado’s best high school player, Michael Schoolcraft.

Schoolcraft has 30 goals and 41 points on the season.

“We have to stay with him the whole game,” Ruff said. “They’re dangerous. But we’re on the playoff journey and on the playoff run.”

Hayden boys basketball team knocks off Paonia

The Hayden High School boys basketball team took another step toward securing the No. 2 seed in the district playoffs Friday night with a 69-57 victory at Paonia.

The Tigers blew the game open with a 30-9 third quarter in which senior Raul Valdez scored 10 points.

Senior Murphy Smartt led Hayden on the evening with 22 points. He also hauled down 11 rebounds.

“We played a pretty good ballgame overall,” Tigers coach Mike Luppes said. “We came down knowing we needed to get a W, and that’s what we did.”

With the win, Hayden, 12-5 and 7-1, is the only one-loss team in the district. Meeker remains undefeated and is likely to win. The Tigers aren’t out of the woods — a district matchup against two-loss Soroco awaits next week — but were happy to walk away from Paonia on top.

Hayden managed to get the win Friday despite losing its point guard, Graig Medvesk, just three minutes into the game when he picked up his third foul. He sat the rest of the half, but the team managed fine without him and built a 27-19 lead by the end of the second quarter.

Rene Valdez finished with 14 points.

The team returns to the court at 7:30 p.m. at home Tuesday for a non-league game against North Park.

Tigers girls team struggles against Class 2A’s No. 1

The Hayden girls basketball team didn’t have much go right Friday night in a blowout loss to Class 2A’s No. 1 team, Paonia. The Tigers fell, 61-26.

“They just come at you nonstop,” Hayden coach Eric Hamilton said. “They are very good. Their pressure is tough, and they crash the boards well. They’re just strong and very deep.”

Erin Koehler led Hayden with 12 points.

“She played super hard,” Hamilton said. “She’s been playing really tough recently, and this was her best game of the year. For a sophomore, she’s been outstanding.”

Hayden plays at 6 p.m. at home Tuesday against North Park.
