Steamboat hockey rebounds with shutout road win

Ben Ingersoll

— Steamboat Springs High School hockey used a pair of third-period goals from Quinn Cain and Matt Hale to edge out Chatfield on the road and get back on the winning track Saturday night.

A day after dropping their first game of the season against Resurrection Christian, 5-2, the Sailors rebounded thanks in large part to Brandon Martin’s two assists, one on a power play and one on an empty net.

Sailors coach Brent Tollar said it was a back-and-forth contest.

“It was one of those games where we fought and fought,” Tollar said. “They played so hard, and we just couldn’t get the puck in the net. If we just gone one in, we’d be OK.”

As the game wound down, Steamboat got that goal off a beautiful shot by senior captain Cain.

Steamboat goalie Trent Trask again anchored the Sailors’ defense, locking up all 15 Chargers shots in the game. Tollar said, slowly but surely, his team is tightening up its zone defense and developing into the physical unit it will need to be to continue on the winning track.

Steamboat’s next game will be Wednesday at Aspen (2-1). The Sailors’ first home game will be Friday against Columbine at 6:30 p.m.at Howelsen Ice Arena.
