Steamboat hockey cruises to win against Dakota Ridge

— Finally, Steamboat Springs High School hockey coach Jeff Ruff just simplified it: All the lines scored Saturday at Dakota Ridge.

Besides, when your team wins 11-0, it can be tough to remember who scored.

For the record, Blayne Conroy, John Wharton and Lance Ostrom each had two, and Colin Walt, Alex Elliott, Skyler Martin, Jarret Walt and Christian Ramirez each had one.

“We challenged them to play hard, and they did,” Ruff said. “All three of our lines connected. It was a solid win. It was three solid periods of the intensity we’re going to need next weekend.”

Steamboat led 3-0 after the first and 6-0 after the second and scored five goals in the third to complete the rout.

Most important for Steamboat, the team got solid contributions from its line of Conroy, Elliott and Martin. Each scored and provided a presence that will be needed when Steamboat decides its playoff fate next weekend with a pair of games against two of the top four teams in the Foothills Conference.

Steamboat plays at 6:30 p.m. Friday at home against Chatfield. The team then plays at 5 p.m. Feb. 12 at Standley Lake.

If the Sailors (13-3 overall, 9-2 in the conference) win both, the team will be the No. 2 seed out of the conference and will host an opening-round playoff game.

“The guys are real focused on getting that second spot in the conference and the home game,” Ruff said. “We play well at home on the big ice.”
