— Consistent play paid off for local golfer Kellie Banisky, who posted two of her best rounds of the season to win Steamboat Golf Club’s ladies title this month.

Banisky unseated defending champion Julie Brusky in the two-day, 36-hole tournament that took place at Steamboat Golf Club on Aug. 10 and 17 with a gross score of 160.

Laurie Buelow was second at 179, Linda Danter was third at 180, and Maggie Subr was fourth at 203.

“It was a tough field this year,” Banisky said. “My opening round (79) was the lowest score I’ve shot in several years.”

She played with Brusky on both days and said having the defending champion in the same group was an advantage.

“I think we pushed each other through the whole tournament,” Banisky said.

Brusky, who made a solid run at this year’s gross title, won the net division (which includes handicap) with a score of 127. Since she placed in the net division, her score was not counted in the gross scores. Golfers are placed in either the gross or net divisions based on score but cannot place in both.

Brusky topped the net division and was followed by Lindsay Giessinger in second, Beth Taylor in third and Juli Montes in fourth.

“She played really well on both days,” Brusky said about Banisky. “It was great to win the net division, but I think winning the gross division would have been a lot more rewarding for me.”

More than 20 golfers played in this year’s club championships, which were held on consecutive Tuesdays. Tuesday is ladies day at the Steamboat Golf Club.

“The tournament is nice, but it’s really just another day on the course for me,” Brusky said. “I just enjoy getting out there and playing the game.”
