Steamboat girls volleyball loses in 4 games to Delta

— The Steamboat Springs High School volleyball team dropped its Western Slope League opener Friday, falling in four games to Delta.

Delta beat Steamboat, 25-14, 25-23, 17-25 and 25-20.

The Sailors were without junior outside hitter Maggie Stanford, who hurt her right arm in practice Wednesday.

“We all needed to step it up,” Steamboat coach Wendy Hall said. “We had to replace the offense that Maggie usually provides us, and I don’t think everybody did that. Everyone had to share the load, and we didn’t do that as a team.”

Steamboat had opportunities in the second and fourth games, leading in each, before allowing Delta back into the game.

Hall said in the team’s losses this year, a common factor is the fire the team plays with. She said when things are going well, the team responds. When they don’t, the team struggles.

“We have kind of picked and chosen when we fight,” Hall said. “We need to fight from start to finish and have more energy on the floor. It’s the same old story with our losses this year. They got to learn that lesson and until they do we’re going to continue to struggle.”

Steamboat next plays at 1 p.m. today at Palisade.
