Steamboat Springs girls tennis continues to find ways to win this season, even without a senior on the team.

The Sailors have just one loss, to Vail Christian, within the region and most recently welcomed Cedaredge and Delta to town for the final home matches of the season on Saturday, tallying two more victories of 7-0 and 6-1, respectively.

Junior captains Lucia del Haya and Dylan Quinn said they are impressed with the team’s efforts this season and have enjoyed watching the younger girls grow so much on and off the court.

“All of our freshmen and sophomores are doing so well, I’m really proud of them,” Quinn said. “Especially with doubles, it was really hard at first to figure out the lineup because court chemistry just didn’t work out. I think we have a good lineup now where everyone and their partners can work together …”

“They have this bright spark and they are all so open-minded and open to corrections,” del Haya added. “They have so much fun with it and I admire their way of having fun.”

Despite only being juniors, del Haya and Quinn bring a wealth of experience to the court, having qualified for the state tournament the past two seasons. At No. 1 singles, del Haya was crowned regional champion both years as well.

Individually, the two are focused on being more consistent and maintaining positive attitudes on the court.

“The biggest thing for me was telling myself I don’t have something to prove to everybody,” Quinn said. “My whole issue mentally was having people around the court and thinking I have to prove something to them that I’m a good player, and if I miss one shot then I’m a terrible player. You don’t need to prove yourself to anybody except yourself.”

As a team, the girls determined the results would come if they remember to keep the energy high and not harp on minor errors.

“Our main goal is to have fun,” del Haya said. “We had a team vote of what we wanted to accomplish this year. What we decided on was hard work; putting in the effort; playing to your best ability and being respectful of teammates, opponents and coaches.”

Next up for the Sailors is a set of road matches against Glenwood Springs and North Fork on Friday. The team will then gear up for regionals in Grand Junction where the top two regional performers from each line will advance to the state tournament.

Dylan Quinn, a junior captain of the Steamboat Springs girls tennis team, has focused on maintaining a positive attitude in challenging moments on the court this season. She managed two victories on Saturday over Cedaredge and Delta at the Steamboat Tennis Center.
