Steamboat girls take a step in tourney loss

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team couldn’t snap their losing streak playing this weekend in their home tournament, the Steamboat Shoot-Out, but after another loss, this one 46-26 against Northridge in the tournament’s seventh-place game, coach George Ibarra said his squad improved throughout the weekend.

Indeed, Saturday’s final game was the most competitive the team played and represented the second-most points the team has scored this season.

“We calmed down. The girls really concentrated as a team. The energy was there,” Ibarra said. “We saw such an improvement in three games I’m excited. We’re starting to see what they can do.”

A key stat for Ibarra was the team’s 13 turnovers Saturday. That’s after the team registered 43 during a game last week and 29 in a game earlier in the tournament.

“You keep the turnovers down, you’ll have more success,” he said. “Now we just need to work on getting the ball in the basket. We were averaging about 22 shots a game. Today, we put up 55, which is great.”

Steamboat, 0-5, next plays Friday at home against Moffat County.
