Steamboat girls soccer caps off weekend tourney with wins

— At this point, it’s all about figuring out what type of team the Steamboat Springs High School girls soccer team has the potential to be.

But after finishing the Colorado Academy Tournament, 2-0-1, Steamboat has to like its chances as it prepares to hit the Western Slope League schedule.

“We came down trying to win the whole thing,” Steamboat coach Rob Bohlmann said. “But that’s second fiddle to the measurement off where we are. It’s about being prepared for league play.”

Steamboat beat Frontier Academy, 4-2, on Thursday and tied Middle Park, 2-2, on Friday. The team was put in the consolation final Saturday against Vail Mountain School after just missing out on playing in the championship game to Middle Park because of goal differential.

Steamboat, however, had little trouble with Vail Mountain School, easily winning, 6-0.

Sydney Bauknecht led the Sailors during the weekend, registering six goals. Joanie Bier added two goals, and Natalie Pearl, Jenna Peters and Tatum Sear each added one.

Steamboat opens its league schedule at 6 p.m. Thursday at home against Moffat County. The team then plays at 7 p.m. Friday at rival Battle Mountain.
