Steamboat girls lacrosse surges in season opener

A dozen second-half goals helped lift the Steamboat Springs High School girls lacrosse team to a win in its season opener Friday, 17-7 against Durango while playing in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Coach Betsy Frick said a big game from sisters Isa Demorat, a senior, and Gabby Demorat, a sophomore. The two moved to Steamboat last summer from Virginia and accounted for the first six goals of their new team’s season.

Those weren’t the only “wow” stats. The squad had a 57 percent shooting mark, 10 assists on those 17 goals and 10 saves from Ava Thiel in goal.

Frick said it was as strong and balanced an offensive showing as she’s seen in the program’s history. Isa Demorat had six goals, Lucy Shimek five, Riley Schott four and Gabby Demorat two. Schott also had four assists, Shimek and Gabby Demorat two and Isa Demorat and Kelly Strotbeck one each.

The Sailors will play two more times Saturday in Santa Fe, first against Pueblo West, then against Santa Fe Prep.
