Steamboat Springs — The Steamboat Springs High School girls basketball team ended its season Friday night with a 48-42 loss to Wheat Ridge in the Class 4A state tournament.
Coach John Ameen said the girls started the game strongly, at one point having a 9-point lead in the second quarter of the game played in Broomfield. The No. 5 Wheat Ridge team played a pressure-zone defense, which the No. 4 Sailors initially were able to handle.
The Sailors then began to struggle offensively and had too many scoreless possessions against Wheat Ridge.
"We played well," Ameen said. "It just came down to spots in the game where we could have executed better."
Despite the loss, the team sounded upbeat, driving to watch the boys play in their tournament in Longmont.
"This whole year was a good, positive step for our program," Ameen said. "It's the best this program has been in a while. It's been fun."

Ameen said a lot of the players were disappointed to see the season come to an end, but that they were proud of how far they had come.
"They're disappointed, but kids are resilient," Ameen said.
