“We played really good as a team,” coach Herald Stout said. “We played much better as a group, and the girls were where they should be.”

Steamboat lost both games against an A team and won two games against a B team.

The Colorado Select B team was the same team Steamboat defeated twice earlier in the week to win a tournament against Aspen.

Stout said Steamboat had flashes of greatness against the undefeated A team.

In its first game against the Select A team, Steamboat trailed, 1-0, after the first period, but the skill of the Denver team eventually overpowered the local squad. The game ended at 6-1.

“After the first (period), the girls started to wear down,” Stout said, attributing part of the loss to the two-hour drive before the game. “If we had played the rest of the game like that first period, it might have been a different story.”

After easily disposing of the Select B team twice – 7-1 and 8-3 – Steamboat again played the Select A team.

This time, Steamboat quickly fell behind, 5-0, in the first period, but outplayed and outscored the Denver team the rest of the game before finally losing, 7-3.

Despite the lopsided losses, Stout said the games gave his team a new goal as the season progresses.

“Our team goal is to beat the A team by the end of the year,” he said. “I think that the Colorado Select A team is great competition, and every time we play them, they do a favor by making us better. I know we’re going to beat them. They haven’t lost yet, but we plan on changing that.”

The Steamboat Springs 12-and-under girls team next plays in the Adele Dombrowski Girls Tournament at Howelsen Ice Arena on Jan. 6 and 7.
