Steamboat girls basketball can’t maintain wire-to-wire lead, loses in 1st round

— Steamboat Springs High School girls hoops led nearly wire to wire against its district tournament first-round foe, Montrose, on Thursday night.

All but the final moments of what was a considerably physical contest.

The Sailors built a 13-10 first-quarter lead, marched into halftime up 22-19 and held a 35-33 advantage heading into the final seven minutes. But Montrose — a squad Steamboat beat in its home tournament in December — needed just nine points to the Sailors’ four in the fourth to steal a first-round win, 42-39.

“The worst part is we were ahead by five points with five minutes left and that’s where we just didn’t play,” Steamboat coach Mack Spitellie said. “We outplayed them the whole game.”

But when Steamboat would build any kind of lead, usually by four, five or six points, Montrose would climb back to make it a one-possession game, Spitellie added.

Steamboat was led in the scoring department by senior Maddie Robertson with 11 points. Fellow senior Maggie Crouch, returning after missing a few games with a lingering broken hand, pitched in nine points. Sophomore Annie Osbourn also had nine.

Steamboat, the No. 6 seed, will play No. 7 Delta at 3 p.m. Friday. The Sailors lost both meetings with the Panthers in league play.
