Steamboat freestylers compete in Deer Valley World Cup

It was a strong weekend for United States skiers in Park City, Utah, at a freestyle skiing moguls event last weekend, though it wasn’t the best weekend for Steamboat Springs-connected athletes.

U.S. skier K.C. Oakley won the moguls event Friday while Hannah Kearney was second in the dual moguls event Saturday.

Steamboat skier Sophia Schwartz was 18th on Friday while Steamboater Lane Stoltzner was 37th in her first career World Cup start.

A day later in duals, Schwartz was 11th and Stoltzner 31st.

Canadian Justine Dufour-LaPointe was second and sister and teammate Chloe Dufour-LaPointe third on Friday behind Oakley to round out the podium. Justine Dufour-LaPointe was first and Australian Britteny Cox third around Kearney on Saturday.

On the men’s side, Pat Deneen was third behind Canadian Mikael Kingsbury and Australian Matt Graham on Friday. Deneen trained briefly with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club.

Steamboat skier Jeremy Cota was 30th in Friday’s moguls and very strong in Saturday’s duals, placing eighth.

Kingsbury won again Saturday in duals. U.S. skier Dylan Walczyk was second, and Switzerland’s Marco Tade was third. Deneen was fourth.

The World Cup now moves on to Austria but returns to the United States to Lake Placid at the end of the month.
