STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — No people or animals were hurt when a barn caught fire Sunday morning near Lake Catamount.

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 27860 Routt County Road 18 shortly after 7 a.m.

The cause is still under investigation.

The barn was being used to store materials and vehicles, and firefighters arrived to find the back part was on fire.

There were no fire hydrants, and the five firefighters who arrived first ran out of water while working to protect vehicles outside the barn.

Firefighters then waited for a water truck.

Oak Creek firefighters were called to help, but they were unable to.

Hayden was able to send seven firefighters and equipment.

Six off-duty Steamboat firefighters also arrived to help.

After a water truck arrived, firefighters were able to get the fire under control with minimal damage to the barn.

While working at the fire, Steamboat firefighters had three other calls.

Two of them were medical related and required people to be taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center.

Firefighters that arrived for their 8 a.m. shift were able to handle those calls with a single ambulance.

Responding agencies also included the Routt County Sheriff’s Office and Yampa Valley Electric Association.
