Steamboat City Council removes Blackmere Trail from off-leash dog trial program

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs City Council approved a two-year extension of Steamboat’s off-leash trial areas, excluding Blackmere Trail.

Council approved the extension in a 5-2 vote, with council members Heather Sloop and Sonja Macys opposed.

Users still will be allowed to recreate with dogs off leash at Whistler Park and on the Butcherknife and Lower Spring Creek trails.

Council also took the following actions at its Tuesday, Sept. 4, meeting:

  • Council considered canceling the construction of an additional ice arena in Howelsen Park. Ultimately, council requested more information regarding the budget and details of a memo of understanding regarding the project. Read more in Thursday’s Steamboat Pilot & Today.
  • Council unanimously approved jointly hosting the FIS Ski Jumping Continental Cup with Park City, Utah. Council also agreed to give $5,000 to sponsor bibs in the event.
  • Council approved a preinclusion agreement with the Steamboat Springs Area Fire Protection District outlining the governance of the district should voters approve the inclusion of the city in the Fire District.
