Steamboat C-SAP scores higher than like districts

— Steamboat Springs third-graders had higher C-SAP reading test scores than most districts of similar size and demographics in the state, with 85 percent scoring at or above the proficient level.

The Colorado Department of Education released the third-grade reading scores of the Colorado State Assessment Program test this week for all school districts in the state.

Director of Content Standards Judy Harris said that while it is interesting to compare scores to other districts, she would rather compare programs.

“I like to look at schools with a similar range of students, similar demographics and resources,” she said, adding that she knows the programs in close-by districts and is interested in their scores.

“But, what may work at one school may not work at another. If it’s a good program that’s addressing the content standards and finds that focus, that’s important now, focusing on what kids need to know and what they are able to do,” she said.

Harris said that focus is important when dealing with the Colorado Content Standards and the C-SAP and she thinks that Steamboat schools have that focus in their programs, as evidenced by the increase in the percentage of students getting scoring at or above proficient on the test. In the two years previous, Steamboat Schools scored 79 percent in those levels.

Harris noted again that this is the first year no students received an unsatisfactory score.

This year, 276 schools in the state scored above 80 percent in the proficient or advanced level, although many of those that scored 100 percent had fewer than 50 students taking the test.

Harris said that with only 143 Steamboat Springs third-graders taking this year’s test, one or two students can make a difference.

The Colorado Department of Education also broke down scores by district size. With just less than 2,000 students, Steamboat falls into the category of districts with 1,201 to 6,000 students. The average among those districts is 72 percent in the proficient or advanced levels.

Harris said that while a gender breakdown for math scores is interesting, with reading the difference is not as important. Eighty-eight percent of girls and 83 percent of boys scored in the proficient or advanced categories.

“I don’t see any real problem,” she said.
