Road closures on Berthoud Pass scheduled for Monday

Beginning Monday, Sept. 25, Colorado Department of Transportation crews will perform routine maintenance on the Gazex system on Berthoud Pass.

As part of the operation, a helicopter will be used to transport oxygen and propane bottles from the Stanley slide area to be filled, which will require a road closure. In early October, the bottles will be reinstalled via helicopter in preparation for winter weather.

Those traveling over Berthoud Pass on U.S. Highway 40 should expect up to 30-minute traffic holds between mile markers 247 and 250 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday. This work is weather dependent, and the schedule is subject to change.

Gazex is a system that improves how CDOT approaches avalanches, while improving the safety of its workers and the public. Instead of handling live ordinance, Gazex is a permanent installation that uses compressed gases to to trigger a slide. The system is triggered remotely from a secure distance. All traffic will be stopped during the remote triggers until the roadway can safely be reopened.
