Steamboat briefs: Young Professionals Network seeks scholarship applicants

The Young Professionals Network of Steamboat has extended the deadline for this year’s scholarship applications for the Youth Education Scholarship Fund. The funds are awarded in two categories consisting of Routt County High School graduating seniors and past recipients of the scholarship who are still enrolled. The deadline has been extended until May 15.

Three scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded to three graduating seniors in Routt County. The scholarships are open to any Routt County high school senior who has been attending a Routt County high school for at least two full semesters.

The funds for this annual scholarship are being raised through the annual YES Golf Tournament, currently in its 27th year. YPN is still accepting groups of four or singles for the tournament, and is still accepting gift giveaways and hole sponsorships.

Extension Office offers home canning class this Saturday

A home canning basics class will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the CSU Extension Office in the Courthouse Annex in Steamboat Springs. Routt County Extension and their master food safety advisors will teach the three-hour introductory canning session. The program will include instruction from the Yampa Valley’s most accomplished food preservers as they demonstrate the basics of water-bath and pressure canning at altitude. The cost is $15, and the registration fee includes the “Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving.” To reserve a space in the class, call the Extension Office at 970-879-0825.



Great North Routt Chili Cook Off slated for Sunday

The 13th annual Great North Routt Chili Cook Off will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 3 at Hahn’s Peak Roadhouse on Colorado Highway 129 by Steamboat Lake. Entries for red chili, green chili, dessert and other foods must be dropped off by 12:30 p.m. Entry fee is $10 and includes admittance to the event. Cost is $15 to eat (children younger than seven eat free). All proceeds benefit the North Routt Community Charter School and the North Routt Preschool. Call 970-871-4559 for more information.

Library to host Alternative Fuels Auto Expo on Tuesday

Bud Werner Memorial Library and the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council will present a free Alternative Fuels and Gas-Saving Technologies Auto Expo from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot at the Depot Art Center. After the auto expo, a free screening of the film “Pump,” a new documentary that tells the story of America’s addiction to oil, will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Library Hall.

A variety of alternative fuel vehicles will be on hand for the community to explore at the auto expo, with experts available to answer fuel-burning questions. Vehicles slated for display include a 2015 Porsche Cayenne SUV plug-in electric hybrid, a 2013 Nissan Leaf, a 2014 Ford C-Max plug-in hybrid, a 2015 Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid electric, a hydrogen fuel Hummer, a hybrid bus, a biodiesel-fueled VW Beetle, a hybrid diesel/recycled-cooking-oil Mercedes, a Honda Insight, a propane-powered school bus, a 2013 Ford F250 bi-fuel CNG/gasoline pickup and electric bikes. Ice Arena learn to skate program registration open

Howelsen Ice Arena’s summer Learn to Skate registration is now open. Two four-week sessions are offered at reduced costs and there is a new mix-and-match class dates with a five-class punch card good for the entire summer. Classes begin June 16 and are held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Learn to ice skate and initiation to hockey classes are open to children ages 3 1/2 and older.  The Solandt Memorial Hospital aims to continually pay tribute to the memory of pioneer physician John Solandt by maintaining, preserving and using the community building in Hayden for health and well-being services that provide for the needs of the community.
