Steamboat briefs: Work on road to hot springs scheduled to begin Aug. 17

Motorists destined for the Strawberry Park Hot Springs north of Steamboat late this month are likely to encounter construction delays as Routt County replaces the culvert that carries Gunn Creek beneath Routt County Road 36 (Strawberry Park Road).

The site is 2.5 miles north of the intersection of C.R. 36 and the intersection with Amethyst Drive, and also north of the bridge over Soda Creek. Assistant Road and Bridge Director Mike Mordi reports that the work will begin Aug. 17 and is expected to continue for four weeks with work beginning daily at 7 a.m. and continuing until

5:30 p.m.

One lane of traffic will be available at all times, according to Mordi. However, there will be times when traffic will be stopped intermittently.

Union Wireless to plans to phase out 2G network

Union Wireless will phase out its 2G network by the end of the year to better serve its customers’ data and communication needs, according to a news release.

As part of the transition process, a small percentage of customers will need to upgrade from outdated 2G-only phones to network-compatible devices.

“We are contacting customers in advance to migrate those users to the new network,” said Brian Woody, chief customer relations officer, in the news release. “As devices rapidly change from 2G to newer technologies, upgrading old phones is inevitable and necessary. A new phone will allow customers to take advantage of improved service, safety, productivity and entertainment features.”

On average, Union Wireless has invested $20 million each year since 2009 on infrastructure, including new cell sites, fiber-optic cable, transmission equipment and network upgrades.
