Steamboat briefs: VNA offers $14 meningococcal vaccines

— For a limited time, Northwest Colorado Visiting Association is offering the meningococcal vaccine for $14 for adults and $14 or less for children. The vaccine is available at any of the VNA’s drop-in clinics, or call at 970-879-1632 or 970-824-8233 to schedule an appointment.

VNA offers free breast and cervical exams for women

The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association has announced a program to reduce breast and cervical cancer mortality through the Women’s Wellness Connection. The program provides free breast and cervical exams and selected diagnostic services to women ages 40 to 65 who meet financial qualifications. The program targets women who have not had a mammogram or Pap test within the past year or women who have lost insurance, had an abnormal finding and need follow-up. Call the VNA at 970-871-7646.

Integrated Community in need of board members

Integrated Community is recruiting new board members. Accounting, finance and fundraising experience is desired. The agency also is seeking English tutors for adults and people interested in telling stories in Spanish to preschool and school-age children.

Guys Read book club seeks members; moms welcome

The Bud Werner Memorial Library continues the new Guys Read book club for boys ages 9 and older. A parent is optional, and moms are allowed. Guys Read will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 17 and April 14.



Essays, nonfiction sought for 2011 writing contest

Northern Colorado Writers announces the second contest in its 2011 contest series: Personal Essay/Creative Nonfiction. The contest opened Feb. 1 and will run until April 15. Cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50 are offered, and the winners will be published in the 2011 winners’ anthology in December. Winners receive a free copy.

Judging this year’s Personal Essay/Creative Nonfiction category will be writer John Calderazzo, who has been featured in the Best American Stories as well as the Best American Essays. Calderazzo teaches in the new Creative Nonfiction Master of Arts program at Colorado State University.
