Steamboat briefs: Rotary Club scholarship application deadline arrives







The Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs is offering scholarships to Routt County graduating high school seniors who are planning to attend a university, college or vocational program in the 2016-17 school year.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate the following qualities: leadership skills, community service, scholarship achievement, character and demeanor and scholastic achievement.

Applications will also be reviewed based on need and the student’s future educational plans. Students are encouraged to apply by today. Applications can be found at steamboatrotary.com.



Free Trout Steak Revival concert offered by Strings

Strings Music Festival will host a free community concert with bluegrass band Trout Steak Revival along with the Steamboat Springs High School bands and the Moffat County High School jazz band at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 17 at Strings Music Pavilion.

Trout Steak Revival has been working closely with the music students through in-person workshops and video tutorials. The students have practiced their improvisation skills and bluegrass tunes and learned the ways of a professional touring bluegrass band so they can play alongside Trout Steak Revival.

Application period for scholarship set to end Tuesday

Graduating high school seniors can apply online for the J. Robert Young Scholarship, which is offered to graduates of public high schools in locations served by Alpine Bank.

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of financial need to students with a grade point average of 2.75 or higher who are seeking a business-related degree. Students must attend a Colorado college. Two $1,000 renewable scholarships are awarded each year.

The online application must be completed by Tuesday, March 15. Students meeting the criteria of the scholarship may complete the application at wc-cf.org.

Established in 2008 by Alpine Bank employees and an executive committee to honor bank chairman, J. Robert (Bob) Young, on the bank’s 35th anniversary, the scholarship is administered through Western Colorado Community Foundation, a nonprofit public charity.

All Pro Dad monthly breakfast slated for Friday

The All Pro Dad monthly breakfast is from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. Friday, March 18 at the Steamboat Springs Middle School cafeteria. Dads are invited to enjoy breakfast with their kids followed by a discussion on a wide range of topics. All dads and their school-aged kids are welcome. Workshop introduces participants to Nia practice

An introduction to Nia workshop will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19 at Yoga Lila, 1900 Bridge Lane, Suite 1990. Nia is a non-impact aerobic workout that blends the movement forms of dance, martial arts and healing arts. The workshop is by donation. $2.5K study abroad language grant available

The Dring Language Fellowship will provide as much as $2,500 for a Routt County high school student to study a foreign language abroad. Previous fellowship winners have studied French, Spanish, Norwegian and other languages while they stayed for as long as a year abroad. The fellowship emphasizes individual immersion in a language.
