Andrea Clark chosen as December Teen of Month
Andrea Clark, a senior at Heritage Christian School, has been chosen as the December Teen of the Month by members of the Steamboat Springs Teen Council. She was selected for the honor based on the following qualities: demonstrating that teens are valuable community assets, serving as a leader and positive role model and being committed to community service.
Andrea is the president of her school’s student council and leads the yearbook committee for this school year. She volunteers with Selah, a nonprofit organization, and is an active member of the First Baptist Church.
In addition, Andrea is a tae kwon do brown belt and assistant teaches at the Steamboat Springs Martial Arts Club, where she practices. She also is part of the Steamboat Chamber Singers and Heartsong, an all-girls quartet. This multi-talented teen of the month loves history and literature because she loves a good story. Andrea’s peers describe her as the kind of person who would love and care for you in any situation. She puts others before herself and is truly a model of good character that others look up to.
Andrea’s favorite thing to do in Steamboat is to walk the Yampa River Core Trail, especially on fall evenings, when as she says, “the light is starting to dim, on crisp fall afternoons when the scent of dying leaves is on the prowl, and on winter mornings when the frost coats all the branches.”
Ten years from now, she hopes to be spending time with her family, have her own family and work as a cross-cultural correspondent.
Andrea said teens in our community should be valued.
“Teens offer a unique perspective on our culture and society as a ski town and ought to be heard and appreciated for it,” she said. “Vice versa, if teens are supposed to be a capable next generation, then we should be given clear instructions on what it is we’re supposed to do and how we’re supposed to do it.”
The Steamboat Springs Teen Council, in its eighth year, works to increase positive leadership development, involve teens in the community at large and provide substance-free and alternative activities for youth. The program is sponsored by the city of Steamboat Springs and Grand Futures Prevention Coalition and is funded through a grant from Routt County United Way and the Craig-Scheckman Family Foundation.
