Steamboat briefs: Mill Creek Fire 90-percent contained, firefighters report

The Mill Creek Fire remains at 482 acres, and the fire is approximately 90-percent contained, according to a news release from the Routt County Public Information Office. 

Fire activity has continued to be minimal, with some single-tree torching, creeping and smoldering.

Crews spent the day Friday patrolling portions of the line that still showed hotspots from the state of Colorado’s Multi Mission Aircraft flight Thursday. The goal for Saturday was to have 95-percent containment or greater.

Based on the past two days, the incident management team anticipates 100-percent containment by today. This fire may remain smoldering for an extended period of time, possibly until a significant moisture event occurs.

YPN accepting applications for seat on advisory board

The Steamboat Springs Young Professionals Network is now accepting applications for several vacant seats on its 2017-18 advisory board. YPN’s mission is “building a better community through the development of leaders.”

As a committee of the Steamboat Springs Chamber Resort Association, YPN provides its members with volunteer opportunities, professional and leadership development and networking events. The YPN Advisory Board sets the organization’s annual budget and goals, and board service provides a great opportunity to practice leadership and increase engagement in the community.

Local students named to UNC academic honor rolls

Several students from Routt County have been named to the Dean’s List or Honor Roll for the 2016-17 academic year at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Honor roll students included Becca Hoza, Hayden, Dean’s List; Kayla Delancey, Steamboat Springs, Honor Roll; and Cameron Smith, Steamboat Springs, Dean’s List. To earn a spot on the Dean’s List a student must earn a 3.75 to 4.0 grade point average, and to be selected for the honor roll, a student must have a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.74.

BLM Little Snake Field Office seeks public input

The Bureau of Land Management seeks public input on a draft travel management plan and environmental assessment for 331,656 acres of public lands managed by the Little Snake Field Office in Northwest Colorado. This environmental assessment looks at the area known as Travel Management Area 1, which includes Hiawatha, Vermillion Basin, Sand Wash and Bears Ears near Craig.

“Travel and transportation planning is an integral part of BLM’s management of public lands for the benefit of current and future generations,” said Little Snake Field Manager Bruce Sillitoe in a news release. “Public input is a vital step in making sure we get it right when it comes to identifying current and future transportation needs.”

Travel management includes all forms of transportation, including foot, horseback, and mechanized vehicles, such as bicycles, as well as the numerous forms of motorized vehicles. The environmental assessment provides analysis of the proposed plan and alternatives considered during the planning process.

Petis Law Foundation to host Day of Impact, pig roast

The Petis Law Community Impact Foundation will host a Day of Community Impact on July 28 and its annual pig roast July 29.

The Day of Community Impact is a 24-hour scavenger hunt-meets-volunteer event. Participants will race one another throughout the Yampa Valley, trying to complete as many fun-filled challenges as they can, while also volunteering their time and leaving the community in a better place than they found it.

Winning teams will receive additional entries into a drawing for prizes, which include Broncos tickets and a Cloverdale Restaurant gift certificate. Registration for the Day of Impact will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 28, at the Chief Theater, and the race will begin immediately.

The pig roast will take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 29 at Fox Farms, 26575 Routt County Road 33A, and will feature a roasted pig and side dishes prepared by the executive chef for Cloverdale Restaurant, Patrick Ayres, and his sous-chef, Brian Sites. Local band 80 Grit will be performing.

The cost of the race alone is $25 for adults; the cost of the dinner is $35; and for both events, $50. Children 5 and younger are free for both events. 

The tickets to the pig roast include food and drink, and funds from both events will support the Petis Law Community Impact Foundation, which is committed to leaving the community in a better place. PLCIF was created by Petis Law in May of 2016 and has awarded $10,000 to local nonprofits in its first year.
