Steamboat briefs: Kickball Klassic tournament is postponed until Sept. 27

Figure Skate Club begins season with party Sunday

The Steamboat Springs Figure Skate Club will start its season with a kickoff membership party beginning at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Howelsen Ice Arena in downtown Steamboat Springs.

The event will feature a skate swap and an open skate from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Spellbinders is holding a 4-day training this month

Spellbinders, a group that is dedicated to restoring the art of oral storytelling to connect elders to youths, is holding a four-day training in September for interested volunteers.

The training will be led by certified storyteller Ruthmary Allison from the Mesa County chapter of Spellbinders. The workshop is limited to 10 participants, and registration is required by emailing Youth Services Librarian Sarah Kostin at by Sunday.

Training times are from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 21 and 3 p.m. Sept. 28. The cost is $30. 

Family Fun Festival is Sunday at Howelsen Hill

A Family Fun Festival is from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Howelsen Hill. The event includes games, races, live music and a silent auction. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and younger and includes food. Proceeds from the event benefit Steamboat residents Izaac Kinnison and Scott Blair, who both have been diagnosed with brain tumors.

Izaac, 11, is in sixth grade at Steamboat Springs Middle School. Izaac originally was diagnosed in May 2012. After being cleared in February, he found out in June that the tumor had returned.

Blair was diagnosed after suffering a seizure while skinning up Mount Werner on May 5.

The silent auction features merchandise including ski gear, restaurant and hotel certificates, jewelry, art, spa treatments, cleaning and veterinary services and more.

Those who are unable to attend can make a donation to Locals Helping Locals at any Wells Fargo.
