Har Mishpacha expands programming; social today

The Har Mishpacha Sunday School program is expanding its program for kindergarten to third-grade students and fourth- to seventh-grade students, which will be held at 5 p.m. every Sunday at Emerald Mountain School in Steamboat Springs beginning today. Classes will be led by Cindy Ruzicka and Tamar Taye.

A welcoming social for current and interested parents of prospective students will be held at 5 p.m. today at Emerald Mountain School. For more information, email Ruzicka at Har Mishpacha is the Jewish congregation of Steamboat Springs.

City, parks department to host competition today

The city of Steamboat Springs Parks and Community Services Department will host the local NFL Punt, Pass & Kick local competition at noon today at Steamboat Springs High School’s Gardner Field. The program is a national skills competition for boys and girls ages 6 to 15. Girls and boys in five separate age divisions (6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15) will compete in punting, passing and place kicking in a fun and engaging forum.

Cookbook author presents high-altitude baking advice

Bud Werner Memorial Library will host a free talk by internationally award-winning cookbook author and high-altitude food specialist Randi Levin, a.k.a. “The Muffin Lady,” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 in Library Hall.

Levin will share 38 years of experience baking at high altitude and offer guidance for baking and cooking everyday treats and foods in higher elevations, including recipes for those with special dietary concerns. Her talk will cover necessary ingredient adjustments for success, best pans to use when baking at high altitude and how to adjust recipes for gluten-free, sugar-free and heart-friendly diets.

Levin’s “Baking at High Altitude” cookbook was awarded Best First Cookbook in the World by Gourmand World Cookbook Award, the Oscars of the cookbook industry. In 2008 it received an honorary mention as one of the Best of the Best Cookbooks in the World, by Gourmand at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

SSHS Class of 1970 plans 45-year weekend reunion

The Steamboat Springs High School Class of 1970 will hold a reunion the weekend of Sept. 25 to 27. Class members will be meeting at the Gleasons’ home Friday, Sept. 25, before the Sailors homecoming football game. The class will also meet for coffee at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27 at The Egg and I.
