Steamboat Briefs for Feb. 25

Police arrested two Steamboat Springs men Thursday night after the two were caught on videotape stealing cash from a purse left on a city bus.

Eduardo Alvarez Lopez, 19, and Irvin Sevilla, 18, were booked into Routt County Jail on theft charges after a Steamboat Springs Transit driver recognized the men from security footage of the theft.

A Steamboat Springs woman accidentally left her purse on a city bus Thursday morning, Steamboat Springs Police Sgt. Dale Coyner said. The woman returned to the bus 15 minutes later, where she recovered her purse minus an undisclosed amount of cash.

After the theft was reported to the Steamboat Springs Police Department, officers and transit officials reviewed security tapes from the bus, which showed Lopez and Sevilla taking the cash, Coyner said.

The men got off the bus before the woman returned to collect her purse, and they boarded a different bus, where security tapes show them counting the money, Coyner said.

Police received a call Thursday night from a transit driver who recognized the men from the security tapes when they boarded another city bus.
