Steamboat briefs: Federal firefighters to burn slash piles in Routt County

— The Bureau of Land Management Little Snake Field Office plans to begin burning slash piles 21 miles north of Steamboat Springs on Thursday.

The slash piles were generated as a hazardous fuels reduction project completed in 2013. The project reduced the threat of wildfire to the Willow Creek Subdivision and improved forest health.

If weather permits, burning will begin Thursday or early the following week.

Smoke will be visible to area residents and people traveling on Routt County Road 129.  Prescribed fire smoke may affect residents’ health. For more information, visit

Library’s foreign film series continues at 7 p.m. today

Bud Werner Memorial Library’s free foreign film series continues at 7 p.m. today at the Chief Theater with “Amour Fou,” an international film festival favorite from Austria, Luxembourg and Germany directed by Jessica Hausner.

Forever under-appreciated and melancholy, Heinrich is a young poet in Romantic Era Berlin who determines his best way out of despair is to end it all, and he sets about finding a woman to join him in his predetermined departure.

Recently diagnosed with a terminal illness, the well-off, but unremarkable Henrietta, fascinated by Heinrich’s controversial “The Marquise of O,” finds his offer intriguing, if a bit strange. Yet, she agrees to navigate the uncharted journey toward a suicide pact with him, a proposition that is at once awkward and enlightening for them both.

Rather than a declaration of passionate devotion, the film — inspired by the actual suicides in 1811 of Heinrich von Kleist and Henrietta Vogel — goes against expectations to become a wry and curious denunciation of dying for love. The film screens in German with English subtitles. Visit for more information.
