Steamboat briefs: Elk River Road waterline project begins Phase 2

— Phase 2 of the Elk River Road waterline replacement project begins Monday, according to a news release. The new phase will alter the detour plan: Northbound traffic will return to Elk River Road from U.S. Highway 40 to Copper Ridge Drive and Downhill Drive. Traffic then will be rerouted through Copper Ridge Business Park to the northern Copper Ridge Circle access and back onto Elk River Road. 2011 Steamboat graduate named to spring dean’s list

Justin Doerr, a 2011 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, was named to dean’s list at the University of St. Thomas for the spring 2012 semester. The designation requires a GPA of at least 3.5.

Hayden graduate receives a journalism scholarship

Elaine Cromie, a 2009 graduate of Hayden High School, recently received a $10,000 Hemingway Journalism Scholarship. Cromie is attending the University of Colorado Boulder and plans to graduate in spring 2013 with majors in digital arts and mass communication.

Totally Kids sponsors a free summer food program for children ages 1 to 18 through the summer at Hayden Valley Elementary School. Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9 a.m., and lunch is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Adults can eat breakfast for $2 and lunch for $3. The program is funded through Hunger Free Colorado. Youth football registration still is open until Thursday

Youth football registration remains open for children entering third through sixth grades. The registration deadline is Thursday. Flag football, for those entering third and fourth grades, will begin Aug. 27 and continues on Monday and Wednesday nights. Tackle football, for those entering fifth and sixth grades, will begin Aug. 20 and continues Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. Book Feast tickets on sale at bookstore and library

The inaugural Book Feast — which promotes literacy, books, reading and art for school-age children — is Sept. 7 and 8 at Bud Werner Memorial Library and the Depot Art Center and will consist of author presentations, workshops for budding writers and artists, theater and storytelling performances, book signings, puppet shows, music and more. This year’s lineup includes Janet Stevens, Ingrid Law, Sneed Collard III, Bonnie Phipps, Caroline Stutson, Avi, Craig Brown, Michelle Rodenburg and the Bunport Theater Group. Additional authors will join via Skype, including Wendy Mass, Dan Gutman and Jarrett Krosoczka.

Tickets for the event are available at the library and Off the Beaten Path Bookstore. The cost is $7 for general admission, which includes presentations, theater and some activities. Workshops with visiting artists are $10 each, and each session is limited to the first 20 children who sign.

Save the date for Sisters in Steamboat weekend

The fourth annual Sisters in Steamboat weekend is planned for Oct. 12 to 14. Women are encouraged to invite their sisters, moms and friends to join them in Steamboat for a weekend of parties, enrichment workshops, activities, dining and shopping. This year’s theme is “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” Morning workshops Oct. 13 will run the gamut of personal enrichment categories from journaling and nutrition to tours and creative dabbling and more. Attendees will be encouraged to wear ’80s attire to the Oct. 13 party at Bud Werner Memorial Library. Proceeds from the Chic Chance drawing ticket sales and the live auction for a Fat Tire cruiser bike will benefit the Yampa Valley Breast Cancer Awareness Project. Registration under way for Chili Challenge on Sept. 2

Registration is open for the seventh annual Chuck Wagon Chili Challenge on Sept. 2. The event brings chili, cornbread and salsa contestants from throughout the region to vie for the coveted People’s Choice Award as chosen by the event attendees.
