Steamboat briefs: Deadline to enter dessert bake-off scheduled today

Steamboat Today and Casey’s Pond will be hosting the Holiday Dessert Bake-Off on Monday, Nov. 9 at Casey’s Pond, 2855 Owl Hoot Trail. Community members are invited to put their baking skills to the test by entering their favorite desserts at ExploreSteamboat.com/bakeoff in one of the following categories: Best pie, best cake, best cookies, best miscellaneous dessert, best professional dessert, best presentation and community choice.

Bakers need to enter the Bake-Off by today and judging will take place Monday, Nov. 9 at Casey’s Pond. Winners will receive a $100 gift card to Steamboat Ace Hardware.

M.B. Warner painting to be auctioned this evening

An original oil painting by M.B. Warner will be auctioned off to raise money for the Born Free Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Steamboat Springs. Tickets are $20 each and only 100 tickets will be sold. The drawing will take place at 6:30 p.m. today at Creekside Cafe, 131 11th St. during First Friday Artwalk. Singers schedule set for upcoming performances

The Yampa Valley Singers will present two concert performances of “The Bright Side of the Holidays” at 7 p.m. today and 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Ninth and Oak streets in Steamboat Springs. Selections include Mendelssohn’s “How Lovely Are the Messengers,” “The Tree of Peace,” “Inscription of Hope,” as well as many familiar pieces. Get an early start to the holidays with some carols. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any of the singers and at All That.

Applications due today for art council’s December gift show

Artists are invited to apply for the Steamboat Arts Council’s December gift show. In celebration of the holidays, this December exhibition will feature work from local artists in the main gallery. A boutique-style exhibit will fill the Platform Gallery where note cards, ornaments and other small handmade gifts will be displayed. Applications are due today. Hayden parks, recreation board has volunteer opening

The Hayden Parks and Recreation board currently has an opening on its seven-member volunteer board. The Hayden Parks and Recreation Board helps plan, direct develop and implement recreation activities and events to assist in promoting long-range programs for the development of the town’s recreation system for youth, adults and senior residents.

The Parks and Recreation Board works in cooperation with Parks and Recreation staff to achieve an ample diversity of recreation activities to meet established goals and objectives. Some current programs and events include peewee wrestling, baseball, softball, basketball, tumbling for tots, the Cog Run, Hayden Daze, Easter egg hunt, Harvest Festival and Autumn Tea.

The board meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of every month at Town Hall. Board members must reside within the town limits of Hayden to serve.

Anyone interested is in the position should submit a “letter of interest” via email to jill.delay@haydencolorado.org or by mail at P.O. Box 190, Hayden, CO 81639. Letters also may be placed in the Town Hall drop box. Letters are due no later than 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Write-in for local novelists today at Off the Beaten Path

Bud Werner Memorial Library and Off the Beaten Path bookstore are sponsoring National Novel Writing Month for local writers embarking on writing a 175-page, or 50,000-word, novel during November. Final $20K Day to be held Nov. 13 at grocery store

Routt County United Way’s final $20K Day of the season will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13 at City Market in Steamboat Springs, and it is a critical part of helping the organization meet its overall fundraising goal of $525,000. Money raised during $20K Day goes toward much-needed education, health and income stability services in Routt County. Last year’s November $20K Day raised $26,000, and this year, Routt County United Way is hoping to exceed that benchmark by at least $4,000.

Holy Name Catholic Church hosts annual holiday bazaar

Holy Name Catholic Church is hosting its 18th annual Work of Human Hands Holiday Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 21. This year, the event will include a bake sale and soup/chili luncheon as well as products from local artisans and other nonprofit groups. There will be fair trade, handmade and unique products, including jewelry, baskets, ornaments, coffee and chocolate, provided by low income communities from several countries and available for purchase at church, 524 Oak St. in Steamboat Springs. Money raised at the bazaar will benefit local families or organizations during the holiday season.

Help currently available for insurance enrollment

Individuals who need health insurance or need to renew their plans must do so by Jan. 31. The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association wants to remind people of the following information.

■ There are new plans and prices every year. Financial help is available to lower monthly costs.

■ Free in-person assistance is available to help you.

■ If you’re already enrolled, you need to renew your plan to retain coverage. Be sure to review your options.

■ There are tax fines for not having health insurance.

You must enroll or renew your plan by: Dec. 15 for coverage beginning Jan. 1; Jan. 15 for coverage beginning Feb. 1; and Jan. 31 for coverage beginning March 1.
