Steamboat briefs: CPW looking for input on hunting season structure

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will be hosting a meeting in Steamboat Springs from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at 925 Weiss Drive to get input about the structure of the big game hunting seasons for 2015 through 2019.

“We want to hear from sportsmen and other constituents about how the current hunting season structure is working for them and how it can be improved,” said Bob Broscheid, director of Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The issues that are considered during the big game season structure process include the number of seasons for each species, the overlap among different seasons, breaks between seasons and the beginning and ending dates of hunting seasons. The hunting “preference point” system and totally limited elk hunting units also will be discussed as part of this process.

CPW offers 3 young hunters shot at private turkey hunt

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is offering three young hunters a chance to win a mentored spring turkey hunt on private land near Meeker on April 12 and 13.

As part of the agency’s Hunter Outreach Program, the opportunity is a continuing effort to instill an interest and respect for wildlife, the outdoors and the traditions of hunting in Colorado’s youths.

Applicants 18 and younger that posses a valid hunter safety card must send a letter of interest by March 31 to: DWM Bailey Franklin,
P.O. Box 2181, Meeker, CO 81641.

The letter should indicate an interest in the hunt and include the youth’s name, address and Hunter Education card number. It also must include a phone number for the applicant’s parent or guardian.

In addition, each letter must include an essay of 500 words or less about hunting and why the applicant should be selected. The essay must be written by the applicant and in their own words. The applicant’s interest in hunting, limited experience and desire to learn are suggested topics for the required essay.

The three winning participants will be notified by April 4. They also must be able to attend a pre-hunt orientation at Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Meeker office from 3 to 5 p.m. April 11, accompanied by a parent, guardian or mentor.

For more information, call the CPW office in Meeker at 970-878-6090. To learn more about the Hunter Outreach Program, visit

Hospice and REPS share $20K 2014 Snowball Grant

Hospice and Reaching Everyone Preventing Suicide will share the 2014 Steamboat Ski and Resort Corp. $20,000 Snowball Community Grant, with each organization awarded $10,000, according to a news release.

“The Snowball Community Grant is an ideal way to support local organizations that do so much for Northwest Colorado,” said Chris Diamond, president and chief operating officer of the Ski Corp. “Both of these fantastic community organizations focus on end-of-life matters in a different light but with the same holistic approach to the individual, family and community. Our community is far better off with the work of organizations such as Hospice and REPS and their undivided efforts in helping others.”

The Snowball Community Grant annually awards funds to a local nonprofit agency or organization each spring. The grant emanates from the donor-advised Ski Corporation Charitable Fund with the Yampa Valley Community Foundation. During the past six years, the Snowball Grant has provided $145,000 for local organizations.
