Steamboat briefs: Community blood drive is Thursday at medical center

A community blood drive is from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Yampa Valley Medical Center. YVEA asking for donations to send for fire relief fund

Yampa Valley Electric Association and the state’s 21 other electric co-ops are inviting their members throughout Colorado to help the members of Mountain View Electric Association recover by making a donation to the Black Forest Fire Electric Co-op Relief Fund, according to a news release. Tax-deductible donations may be sent to Colorado Rural Electric Association/Black Forest Fire Fund, 5400 Washington St., Denver, CO 80216. Include your name, address, email and phone number and include a note if you need a receipt for your records.

Talking Green event is Tuesday at Smokehouse

A Yampa Valley Sustainability Council Talking Green event is at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Steamboat Smokehouse, 912 Lincoln Ave.



The free event features Jonah Levine, of Biochar Solutions in Carbondale, who will discuss biomass energy and the carbon sequestration process.

Levine has a Bachelor of Science in applied ecology from Michigan Technological University and a Master of Science in telecommunications and utility engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder. He has worked as a wildlife biologist and a research engineer, according to a news release.



Steamboat’s David Epstein, of Twin Enviro, also will talk about local compost for gardens.

Free Bike to Work Breakfast is at county courthouse lawn

The Bike to Work Breakfast, culminating Bike to Work Month in June, is from 7 to 9 a.m. Wednesday on the Routt County Courthouse lawn.

The free event for bicycle commuters is organized by Routt County Riders and will include grab-and-go breakfast items that have been donated by area restaurants and other businesses.

“It looks like Wednesday will be a perfect bike commuting day,” Routt Country Riders board President Janet Hruby said. “Commuting by bicycle saves money, improves your health, reduces traffic congestion, helps the environment and builds community camaraderie. If you don’t bike commute on a regular basis, give it a try on Wednesday.”

2011 Hayden grad Valora on president’s honor roll

Lysa A. Valora, a 2011 graduate of Hayden High School, was named to the president’s honor roll for the spring semester at the University of Wyoming, according to a news release. The distinction requires a GPA of 4.0 for the semester for students who are enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Golf course offers Ladies Play Day on Wednesdays

Haymaker Golf Course is offering Ladies Play Day every Wednesday from June 26 to July 31. The events have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and cost $10 plus greens fees. LPGA golf professional Shannon Hanely will lead the following events:

■ Wednesday: one BB of foursome odd holes, two BB even holes

■ July 3: flag tournament

■ July 10: mini-member guest tourney

■ July 17: 3-4-5 toss out

■ July 24: beat the pro

■ July 31: one BB gross, one BB net per team

Entrepreneurship center is hosting competition

The Yampa Valley Entrepreneurship Center again is hosting a Business Plan Competition. In its second year, the program encourages well-written, comprehensive business plans to help solicit funding from investors or lenders and promote the vision of the business to partners, key employees and customers, according to a news release.

A free business plan development seminar will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 18 at the Entrepreneurship Center.

The city of Steamboat Springs is offering $10,000 for the creators of the winning business plan and $5,000 to the second-place plan. The winner will also receive three months of office space in the Entrepreneurship Center as well as other business education opportunities.

Plans are due by Sept. 16 to Randy Rudasics before they are presented in early October to a panel of judges including Yampa Valley SCORE business counselors and a regional business consultant. The Hahn’s Peak Area Historical Society is in need of arts and crafts vendors for its art fair and ice cream social from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 6 at the Hahn’s Peak Schoolhouse.
