Steamboat briefs: Community Alliance to hold forum on Nov. 11

The Community Alliance of the Yampa Valley will hold its 2013 Yampa Basin Water Forum at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at Bud Werner Memorial Library.

The forum includes a panel of local water experts — including Mount Werner Water and Sanitation District General Manager Jay Gallagher, Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District General Manager Kevin McBride and Yampa/White Basin Roundtable regional representative Kent Vertrees — who will address local and regional water issues related to the Yampa River.

Fishing derby to be at The Home Ranch on Nov. 2

The Home Ranch will host a fishing derby from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 2 at the ranch, 54880 Routt County Road 129, Clark. There will be prizes for most fish and largest fish as well as a $50 prize for those who catch any of four tagged fish. The cost is $5, and proceeds benefit North Routt Community Charter School and North Routt Preschool.

A beginners’ photography class for kids is Saturdays

A beginners’ photography workshop for children ages 9 to 13 is from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturdays in November at Mogil’s on the Mountain, 1317 Dream Island Plaza.

The class is being offered by Nancy Cameron, a student in Colorado Mountain College’s professional photography program at Spring Valley.

Halloween-themed event at Hayden Public Library

The Hayden Public Library, 201 E. Jefferson Ave., will hold a special Halloween-themed preschool story-hour at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Participating children and their caregivers are asked to dress up for trick-or-treating and a Spook Walk around the neighborhood. The group will leave the library at 11 a.m.

Emerald Mountain School classes are open to public

The following Inspiration Program classes at Emerald Mountain School are open to Steamboat Springs community members:

■ BookTrails for children in first through fifth grades is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursdays from Nov. 7 to Dec. 19, excluding Thanksgiving. The program provides students with an opportunity to improve their reading and writing skills through activities and games. The cost is $25 per day.

■ A holiday ornament and card upcycling class is Tuesdays from Nov. 19 to Dec. 17, excluding Thanksgiving week. Participants will make a winter- or holiday-themed ornament and card each week using found objects. Projects involve collage, book arts, fiber arts and more. The cost is $107.
