Steamboat briefs: Area sidewalk master plan meeting slated for May 18
Steamboat Springs — Steamboat Springs’ sidewalk master plan is being redeveloped, and the city is seeking input from community members. In an effort to solicit feedback, the Public Works Engineering Department is hosting a community open house from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May, 18, at Centennial Hall, Rooms 113 and 114.
At this phase of the master plan process, city staff will be creating a map to designate missing or needed sidewalk links and establish priorities for construction or replacement. At the open house, community members will have the opportunity to view the existing plan and the criteria for prioritization, provide feedback and speak with city staff.
A webpage also has been created to allow community members to review the existing draft plan and submit a questionnaire at steamboatsprings.net/sidewalkmasterplan.
Registration remains open for summer Spanish classes
Summer Spanish classes at Colorado Mountain College’s Alpine campus started this week, but there is still time to register. There is the three-credit, conversational Spanish class offered from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and a non-credit Spanish for Businesses offered from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. To register call 970-870-4444 or visit the college at 1275 Crawford Ave. between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Lupita Hathaway is the instructor for both classes.
Steamboat Institute set to host freedom conference
The Steamboat Institute will host its Eighth annual Freedom Conference and Festival Aug. 26 and 27.
Featured speaker for the event will be Dr. Yaron Brook, executive director of the Ayn Rand Institute and author of the book, “Equal is Unfair: America’s Misguided Fight Against Income Equality.”
Additional featured speaker will include Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, former director of Defense Intelligence Agency and chairman and CEO of Flynn Intel Group; Dr. Michael Ledeen, Foundation for Defense of Democracies; U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse, or Nebraska; Mary Kissel, of the Wall Street Journal editorial board; and Charlie Kirk, founder and executive director of Turning Point USA.
VNA offers precautions to avoid foodborne illnesses
The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association is advising precautions to avoid foodborne illness, particularly through the summer and fall.
Each year, one in six Americans are sickened from consuming foods or beverages contaminated with disease-causing microbes or pathogens. The VNA recommends the following precautions to reduce the risk of contracting foodborne illness.
■ Always wash your hands with soap and water before preparing food.
■ Cook meat, poultry and eggs thoroughly. Use a food thermometer to measure internal temperature of meat.
■ Wash hands, utensils and cutting boards after they have been in contact with raw meat or poultry and before they touch another food.
■ Refrigerate leftovers that won’t be eaten within four hours. Bacteria can grow quickly at room temperature.
■ Wash produce in running tap water. Remove outermost leaves of a lettuce or cabbage. Bacteria grow well on the cut surface of a fruit or vegetable. Take care not to contaminate produce while slicing on a cutting board, and don’t leave cut produce out for many hours.
■ Keep food away from flies and insects.
Common symptoms of foodborne illness include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever and chills. Avoid preparing food for others if you have these symptoms. Pregnant women, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe infections and should not to consume undercooked animal products.
