Annual local election forum held Thursday, Oct. 15

An election forum hosted by the Steamboat Springs Board of Realtors, the Routt County Democratic and Republican parties and the Steamboat Today will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15 at The Steamboat Grand.

The annual forum will start with a meet-and-greet followed by a Q&A session with local candidates at 5:45 p.m. Appetizers and a cash bar will be available prior to the start of the forum.

Steamboat Today Editor Lisa Schlichtman will moderate the Q&A session with candidates for the Steamboat Springs City Council and Steamboat Springs School Board. Local ballot issues, including the school district’s bond issue and mill levy override, will also be debated.

Questions will not be accepted from the audience during the forum, but questions are being accepted in advance of the event. These can be emailed to lschlichtman@SteamboatToday.com.

Integrated Community hosts World Fiesta, Sept. 12

Integrated Community will host World Fiesta from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. The event will offer an evening of world music, cultural cuisine, drinks and dancing. The event will also include entertainment by local dance groups, local artisan crafts for sale and a bouncy house and face painting for the kids. Tickets are available at 443 Oak St. or at the door for a suggested donation of $10. Each ticket enters its bearer in a grand prize drawing for a sports trip for two to Denver.

Claim assistance filing for veterans now available

Anyone wanting information on veterans benefits or who needs assistance filing a claim for veterans benefits can contact Michael T. Steamboat Springs Stage Race seeks volunteers

The seventh annual Steamboat Springs Stage Race, presented by Moots Cycles, is seeking volunteers for Labor Day weekend on Sept. 5, 6 and 7. Volunteer positions include course marshals and feed zones.

Over 400 road bike racers from across the Rocky Mountain region will participate in three days of racing with proceeds supporting LIFT-UP food bank, Routt County Humane Society, Yampa Valley Sustainability Council and Bicycle Colorado.

The stage race details are as follows:

Simply Steamboat Time Trial, Saturday, Sept. 5, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Colorado Highway 131 and River Road.

Sydney Bauknecht named to CSU spring dean’s list

Sydney Bauknecht, a 2012 graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, was named to Colorado State University’s spring 2015 dean’s list. She is studying health and exercise science and business.

Inspiration classes open for registration at Emerald

Emerald Mountain School is offering three Inspiration Classes this fall for second- to eighth-grade students.

■ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu helps students build confidence, discipline, strength and agility. Instructor Dave Marrs is offering sessions from 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays for second- to fourth-grade students and from 5 to 6 p.m. for fifth- through eighth-grade students. The class will run from Sept. 14 to Oct. 26, and the cost is $160.

■ Knots and Beads will meet from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. on Fridays for third- to eighth-grade students. They will learn how to use different kinds of string, knots and beads to make unique necklaces and bracelets. This class runs from Sept. 11 to Oct. 2, and the cost is $80.

■ Cribbage Club will meet from 3:30 to 4:40 p.m. Tuesdays for third- to eighth-grade students. Participants will learn a classic game while enhancing their math skills, learning about odds and probability, how to strategize and how to apply critical thinking. The class runs Sept. 8 to Oct. 22, and the cost is $80.

Equine workshop improves family communication

The Fatherhood Program of Routt County and Humble Ranch are hosting a free workshop for Routt County dads and their kids on Saturday, Sept. 12 with two sessions offered — a morning session from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and an afternoon session from noon to 2 p.m. 

The purpose of the workshop is to improve teamwork and communication skills with each other while having fun with horses. The workshop will be taught by a licensed equine-facilitated learning specialist. All activities happen on the ground and do not include horseback riding.

“Winged Migration” opens Crane Festival Thursday

 The 2015 Yampa Valley Crane Festival opens with a free community screening of “Winged Migration,” winner of an Academy Award for Best Documentary, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 in Library Hall at the Bud Werner Memorial Library.

For 80 million years, birds have ruled the skies, seas and earth. Each spring, they fly vast distances. Each fall, they fly the same route back. Three years of shooting were needed by five teams in order to follow bird migrations flying over the seven continents: from one pole to another, from the seas to snowcapped mountains, from the canopy of heaven to mangroves and swamps, from frozen areas and scorching deserts to our peaceful countryside. 

Numerous innovative techniques and ingeniously designed cameras were utilized to allow the filmmakers to fly alongside, above, below and in front of their subjects. The result is a film of staggering beauty that opens one’s eyes to the ineffable wonders of the natural world.

Arrive early for the crane festival’s Crane Coloring Contest award ceremony, when prizes from Ciao Gelato will be awarded to the Yampa Valley’s young artists from this summer’s contest.
