Annie Ochs, a senior at The Lowell Whiteman School, was named the Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs’ October Student of the Month.

Ochs’ love of environmental studies is reflected in her plans to study environmental engineering in college. This summer, she interned at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Crested Butte, where she worked with a Dartmouth professor to study the population decline of bees and its connection to climate change and plant adaptation.

Ochs made the J2 Nationals as a member of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club’s Alpine ski team. She works tirelessely during the ski season and during the offseason to improve as a competitor.

Ochs also is passionate about addressing teen issues in Steamboat. She was among the leaders who proposed and lobbied for a city ordinance addressing teen use of non-cigarette tobacco products. She also spearheaded initiatives such as a teen volleyball tournament and a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and driving.

Ochs received her Teen of the Month plaque during the Rotary Club’s meeting at The Steamboat Grand on Tuesday. Her mother made the trip from Crested Butte to be part of the ceremony.
