Steamboat briefs: All About Sketchbooking workshop at the library

— Bud Werner Memorial Library is hosting a free All About Sketchbooking workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Library Hall to offer information, inspiration and guided instruction for anyone who wants to participate in The Sketchbook Project.

In 2014, the library will be hosting The Sketchbook Project, a global, crowd-sourced art project and interactive, traveling exhibition of handmade books. The project’s mission is to allow anyone to be able to participate in art and to create a collection of work that represents the current state of artists worldwide.

The library has a limited number of blank sketchbooks available for members of the Steamboat Springs community who want to contribute thoughts, images and tales to the global story. “Sketchbook” is a loose term for experimentation in creativity, as the blank pages can be filled with prose, photography, poems, drawings, doodles, paintings and/or passionate thoughts and experiences. Discounted sketchbooks cost $10 for adults and $5 for youths 17 and younger, and will be available at this event.

Rotary Club accepting applications for grants

The Rotary Club of Steamboat Springs is accepting applications for its latest round of grant funding.

Each year, the local service organization awards about $10,000 in grants to nonprofits. The club has established several areas of focus that guide its grant-making decisions. Some of these guidelines include: activity that improves the quality of life in Steamboat Springs and Routt County; activity that primarily serves seniors and youths; grant funds must be used for specific activities, not operational purposes; and grants will support distinctive, one-time activities and should not be depended upon for multiple years.

A grants committee will review all applications and then award grants of as much as $1,000 to worthy nonprofit groups. Applications and a complete set of grant submission guidelines can be accessed through the club’s website at http://www.clubrunner.ca/portal/Home.aspx?accountid=3667. Completed applications should be returned to jane.toothaker@gmail.com by the Dec. 15 deadline.
