The Steamboat Springs boys tennis team traveled to Loveland for a tournament on Friday, Aug. 26, in hopes of showing growth in the Sailors’ game.

Coach Jason Scicchitano said a lot of weaknesses were exposed during the team’s previous match in Grand Junction, and he used practice time to focus on strengthening those flaws.

In a four team round-robin tournament, Steamboat dominated Skyline 7-0. The Sailors followed that with a 6-1 loss to the eventual champions, Thompson Valley, and then won 4-3 against Loveland.

Scicchitano explained that he saw the boys make smarter shots, utilize stronger swing mechanics and better position themselves in the doubles matches.

“We won two out of our three matches, and we only lost to the winners of the entire tournament,” Scicchitano said. “What a remarkable improvement from last weekend. I can’t wait to work with everyone this week at practice and see even more improvement at our next match.”

The team is working to reschedule its match in Basalt on Saturday, Sept. 3, and if that happens, the Sailors’ next match will be against Durango on Sept. 8 in Grand Junction.
