STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The Steamboat Springs High School boys varsity tennis team advanced one of its four athletes in day one of the class 4A state tennis competition in Pueblo on Thursday, Oct. 11.

Steamboat Springs freshman Andy  Schuiling defeated junior Dario Alcala of Pueblo Central 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of No. 1 singles. He will take on Colorado Academy senior Richter Jordaan in the quarterfinals on Friday, Oct. 12.

Junior Gabe Rabanal and senior John Hannaway fell short on Day 1 at No. 1 doubles, dropping the match 6-2, 6-0 to Colorado Academy’s Caleb Aguirre and Emmett Ela. Ethan Paulus lost at No. 3 singles to Cheyenne Mountain freshman Oliver Muhl, 6-4, 6-1.

Rabanal, Hannaway and Paulus still have a chance to get back into the tournament through a playback bracket if their opponents advance to the quarterfinals or semifinals.

“All of them played really, really well, Andy fought back well, down 1-4 and fought back,” head coach Bill Conway said. “The doubles team played the best tennis I’ve seen this year.”
